I’ll admit I was skeptical how much of this book would apply to my day-to-day interactions with my 5 year-old and 2 year-old, but I was pleasantly surprised how relevant this guide was for a working mom without ample downtime. There are a million little ideas for how to sneak in more engaging play, thoughtful questions and word-based games to support healthy communication and development in young kiddos. I found myself saying, “Why didn’t I think of that?” a bunch as the ideas are simple, yet out of the ordinary. Can’t recommend enough.

I have been looking around for tips for parents who want to increase their child’s language at home, and boy did I find it! This e-book has it all! It begins with giving tips for parents who suspect a speech-language delay, and advice for what to do next. Then, it has a variety of tips for how parents can PLAY with purpose with their child. This book even describes in detail how to use certain toys. Who knew there were so many things you could do with a Mr. Potato Head? I can’t wait to recommend this eBook for all of my Pre-K parents to read and start playing! In a society where tablets and screens are everywhere, it is so timely to have tips for parents who honestly just aren’t sure how to play with their kids anymore. Thank you Emily for such a great resource!

As an Early Childhood SLP, I appreciate learning more about how to improve children’s speech and language development through play. One of the most necessary components of my job is teaching parents and teachers how to play with children to improve their communication, social and cognitive skills. Emily does an amazing job not only explaining why play is so important, but also how to play in order to facilitate development. I simply love that this book is not only helpful to SLPs who work in early childhood, but is also a fabulous resource for parents! Playing with a Purpose gives a terrific overview of typical language development and also teaches you simple play strategies that all children will enjoy. I will definitely be recommending Playing with a Purpose to all of my student’s parents and my fellow SLPs!

Parents and professionals alike crave resources that put it all together: the “what” (knowledge about early communication), as well as the “how” (how do I put this information into practice? How do I play with my child intentionally, ensuring that I’m supporting her development?) – Emily Cohen’s new book, “Playing With Purpose” hits the nail on the head.

As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, parent educator, mother of two young children, and founder of the early development and play resource, “Strength In Words,” I can recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone interested in learning more about how to support early language development through play. The book’s appealing organization, simple and warm graphics (which help to illustrate the author’s message), and the many practical tips, all make it a no-brainer for families of young children (in particular, toddlers and preschoolers) and professionals working to support them. Grab this book today and refer to it again, and again (and again)!

This book is a fantastic resource for parents, and anyone that works with young children! As an elementary school teacher, turned SAHM, it was an adjustment for me to go from being around school aged children to being with my own babies and toddlers. I found that while I remembered a lot of what I learned during my early childhood classes in college about language developement milestones, I really didn’t know how to practically help my babies develop their language skills. Emily gives such practical ideas and concrete examples for how to use toys that most people already have in their homes to foster communication with young children.

I’m so grateful for this well thought out, research-based, and visually friendly resource. I’m a Speech-Language Pathologist that works with students ages 3-5 years of age. All of the information in this book directly applies to what I do daily with my students. This guide is not just for families, it can really help other SLP’s refresh and remind themselves why play is SO important. Parents I work with, often need further support than I can provide in the quick meetings or progress reports. I’m happy to have read Playing With Purpose and have Emily’s resource to recommend to parents to be that additional support. This e-book provides concrete, easy to apply strategies for a busy family and/or therapist. It’s a quick read and if you use it in the e-book format you’re able to refer back to a chapter easily by clicking the title in the table of contents page.

Emily’s passion for her work is so evident in every line. I stand behind her recommendations and ideas, based on Hanen Principles and I’m so proud of this comprehensive and affordable resource. Don’t hesitate to add this to your resource library today!
